The Black Sheep of the LD family: Professor Linda Siegel

Linda Siegel is sometimes referred to as the Black Sheep of the LD family because of her tendency to challenge existing convention. One area in which she has been particularly active has been challenging the notion of using IQ and processing tests in the diagnosis of dyslexia and other learning difficulties. In this Practically Speaking episode Linda talks to Craig Wright about the history of IQ testing and the problems it has caused for children and for the field in general.

Dr Craig Wright discusses Understanding Words, ADHD and response to reading intervention

Students who have one of ADHD and dyslexia ~50% chance of also having the other condition. This video describes research by Dr. Craig Wright and Dr. Liz Conlon. The research shows that when students have both dyslexia and ADHD, treating the ADHD with stimulant medication significantly improves their response to reading intervention.

Teaching students with Asperger's to read

Presentation by Dr. Craig Wright describing research that investigated whether students with Asperger's Syndrome and dyslexia responded to the same reading intervention that is effective for non-ASD students. The research has been published in the Australian Journal of Educational and Developmental Psychology.

Reading intervention over the Internet

Presentation by Dr. Craig Wright describing research that investigated whether reading intervention could be delivered remotely via videoconferencing. The method is effective and holds promise for delivering services to students in rural and remote regions and as a time- and money-saver in urban areas. Understanding Words: A cost effective reading intervention for schools

Presentation by Dr. Craig Wright describing a research study of the Understanding Words reading intervention program. The study showed that the program produced significant reading improvement in Grade 1 children when it was administered by teacher aides in groups of 3 and 4. The study provided the first evidence that Understanding Words is not only effective but it is a cost-effective solution for schools
