When I was working at a Year 3 class we noticed there were students that actually couldn’t read - they couldn’t understand what was expected of them, they couldn’t just sit down and read the paragraph and get on with their work. Our Special Education Teacher who researches programs all the time, came across Understanding Words, and found this program was written by an Australian for Australians. The program was appropriate for what the children needed. You could go at any range. For someone who has never delivered a program like this before, I basically followed the instructions in the booklet and found it extremely easy to follow. I have worked with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorders and this program is perfect for these students.

At our school 80 per cent of the children were identified as having reading difficulties...struggling with decoding, spelling, some language difficulties as well…We wanted to find a program that would meet these children’s needs. 10 of them were identified with special needs, but we had 50 children who didn’t qualify for extra funding, they just didn’t have enough discrepancy… but we still wanted to support these kids. I was directed to Understanding Words through a parent, and I found this program to be comprehensive, structured, systematic and multi-sensory. I just love the format – it covered not just decoding but reading, language, phonemic awareness for those early years. We’ve used it now for many years and I’ve been thrilled.

Living in a rural area we were unable to find anyone to help with our son’s learning difficulties. Fortunately, we were directed to Understand Minds. Just over a year ago our son had virtually given up on learning. Today he continues to make progress with his reading and his self-worth has been restored. The online tuition is quick and easy to set up. In no time, our son was able to independently log in to his own lesson. Working online has been like working in the same room, one-on-one. This type of service would be almost impossible to find in rural and remote regions.
