    When I was working at a Year 3 class we noticed there were students that actually couldn’t read - they couldn’t understand what was expected of them, they couldn’t just sit down and read the paragraph and get on with their work. Our Special Education Teacher who researches programs all the time, came across Understanding Words, and found this program was written by an Australian for Australians. The program was appropriate for what the children needed. You could go at any range. For someone who has never delivered a program like this before, I basically followed the instructions in the booklet and found it extremely easy to follow. I have worked with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorders and this program is perfect for these students.

    At our school 80 per cent of the children were identified as having reading difficulties...struggling with decoding, spelling, some language difficulties as well…We wanted to find a program that would meet these children’s needs. 10 of them were identified with special needs, but we had 50 children who didn’t qualify for extra funding, they just didn’t have enough discrepancy… but we still wanted to support these kids.
