When I was working at a Year 3 class we noticed there were students that actually couldn’t read - they couldn’t understand what was expected of them, they couldn’t just sit down and read the paragraph and get on with their work. At our school 80 per cent of the children were identified as having reading difficulties...struggling with decoding, spelling, some language difficulties as well…We wanted to find a program that would meet these children’s needs. 10 of them were identified with special needs, but we had 50 children who didn’t qualify for extra funding, they just didn’t have enough discrepancy… but we still wanted to support these kids.
